TUESDAY QUOTE OF THE WEEK XXXVII

FINDING TRUTH WHEREVER IT MAY BE FOUND: “The quickest way to beget a desire . . .was to satisfy an old one, and each new desire had a way of becoming more expensive than the last.” From Richard Russo’s "Empire Falls"

QUOTE II: “Of course secular weddings always struck him as foreshortened, the ceremony over and done with almost before it began. It took longer to close on a house and Miles couldn’t help noting that purchasing real estate was viewed, these days, as a more serious occasion, an undertaking with more lasting repercussions.” Ibid.

IN OTHER NEWS:

This column originally appeared in the Friday, October 19, 2007 issue of the Catholic Universe Bulletin, the official newspaper of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland.

Oh my gosh -- I just finished reading Empire Falls and that quote about marriage made it into my "quote book." We just went to three weddings. The first: Catholic with Mass, the second Catholic Church, no Mass, and the third a non-denominational. The differences are striking!

This has nothing to do with the blog today, but I had to share this! Sr. Marie Paule, from Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine in Euclid, OH, also teaches at St. Rocco's.

She asked me to help her with some puzzles for her class - and forwarded me this website. It's really cool! Great for Teachers, Parents, and those of us who are kids at heart.

As long as the Pope remains aligned with the Republican Party, the party of profits at any cost even death, his intentions are totally suspect.

Jesus clearly admonished against the merging of church and state as does our beloved US Constitution.

However the papal emissary, A. Scalia made it very clear in his speech of May, 2000. Therein, Scalia the scum called for and advocated for the END of the rule of law and the END of democracy in America. As long as the Pope is onboard with that kind of thinking there is no room for fundamentalist Catholicism; it is little different from evangelical fundamentalism or Islamic fundamentalism.

For me, I'll just keep my eye on that liberal Jewish guy who lived some 2000yrs ago and spoke of peace and love.

The Catholic Church, my church has gone way far astray from Jesus' teachings and the laws of God.

How does the Pope expect to makeit to the Kingdom of Heaven whenhe is totall committed to the Republican Party.

Why does the Church so often come down onthe wrong side of things. Can we all remember 2000yrs of Catholic hatred for Jews, 2000yr suppression of women, the Churchs imprimatur endorsing Hitler nad the Nazi Party, and so many more wrongs.

Jesus is the Way and the Life and the Light. All elseis but heresy and Papal/Catholic "Moral and Religious Relativism".

Pray for peace; follow the Prince of Peace.

Funny, I remember Rome preaching against the war and most of the clergy in this country following suit. Benedict has continues to be against the war (If you knew anything at all, beyond your pedestrian American concerns, you would know that international Catholics hate the war and US policy in the Middle East because it threatens our coreligionists there.)

You mean the Constitution that promotes slavery and the 3/5 compromise?

Aw, why won't the Church just do what I say?

-Scalia the scum-

Ah, educated dialogue. Lovely.

No, we leave that up to you.

That's a misquote. Dig the Bible out of the backseat of your VW van and read it.

That question belies such ignorance I can't measure up to the challenge. Somebody else will have to spank you for it.

Oh, we've been visited by a Jack Chick offshoot, or maybe a disciple of what's his name...Tony someone, who has a cult in Texarcana?

Great answers, Rob.

Bob, you probably feel as did Mary of Magdala there at the foot of the Cross with Mary, some women--and just one of His Apostles. Where were the others? Jesus' original Church was seemingly faulty from the get-go: there was one defector (and/or 11, one might say!)..but that, too, God brought the greatest good from. And not for a second am I saying any Pope did or does fall short, but as people, we all do.

However, the Heart of the Church cannot come down on the wrong side of things, tho' her members may. Just be the true disciple, and don't worry about the rest. Jesus knew what He was doing when He restored the mission unto Peter.

You have generalized our ills over the years, which does not give credit to any single entity within. And I think you have believed the anti-Catholic propaganda in part, just as Thomas, a former Boanerge may've, so he, too, disappeared and began to castigate others, perhaps.

But not everyone is invited to explore His nail-holes with their fingers, nor His side with their hands..so be careful. As you can imagine, few who love the Church as Mother and Teacher could ever agree, and least of all those who love Benedict. What is most enlightening -- rather than reading of others' takes on it all -- is reading Ratzinger's own words in his many many books.

Peace. Don't worry about it. The Master has it all planned out. And please know that anyone in their right mind is not aligned with the Republican party. Not now. But least of all a Pope. He is the Vicar of Christ, not simply a Bishop in the See of Rome. He is Pontiff of all the world.
