MONDAY DIARY: THE CONTINUING JOURNEY TOWARD BECOMING THE NEXT GENERATION

The following story is true. Only initials were used to protect clerics of minor age.

About a month ago one of our beloved bishops came St. Sebastian to celebrate a baptism for a family member. As part of the ceremony he took the baby over to the altar and held the newest member of the Church over it as a sort of presentation to God.

After the baptism he came over to the rectory for coffe (one of us had milk) and the following conversation took place. This is as close as I can remember it:

At my age, I've now skipped several generations.

I DO remember, when I was a very young adult, that I did not like it when the older generation tried to look like us and "be relevant." I wanted them to "act their age."

ROFL! As a mom though, I want to say that walking back up to the altar with my child was always a difficulty - the reality of giving this tiny babe back to God, and the realization of what a huge trust He's placed in us always hit home and brought me to tears...

The second most expensive thing you own brought me to your blog and I've been reading ever since. Thanks so much for sharing - esp. the cartoon drawings ;-)

Wow, that's too funny. Am I correct in assuming that Fr. P is in his late 20's early 30's?

You story brings to mind my older daughter's baptism. Fr. had a tradition of placing the newly baptized babies on the altar after Mass to say a special blessing over them. Our daughter, in an effort to mortify her parents, no doubt, loudly let one rip while she was on the altar. Fr.'s reaction was priceless.

Does Fr. P. know how to draw?

During the Rite of Baptism in the ancient Ambrosian Rite, the infant is greeted at the door to the baptistry and laid upon the floor with feet pointed towards the north (in an oriented church), symbolic of the missio ad gentes (north being the direction of the heathen Lombards). Following the post-baptismal anointing, the infant was then carried into the sanctuary and elevated and then laid upon the altar where the sacred minister and assistants genuflected in adoration of the divine presence now in the soul of the child.

As for Fr. P...Oh to be young again! ;-)

I'm laughing out loud, Father. Although I'm afraid the cartoons are shortening my attention span worse than blog-reading had already done. Now when I see one of your non-cartoon posts, I think "Wow. So many words. Couldn't he just draw a picture for me??"

Keep it up. I love it.
