MONDAY DIARY: ALMOST EXCRUCIATINGLY TRUE STORIES: DUTY IS NONE-THE-LESS FOR BEING PLEASURE

One of the things that I am doing for Lent this year is a practice of every day giving something away and/or throwing something away.  We've been off to a great start!
It is not always easy.  It can be a challenge.
The sad thing is that this is the third year in a row that I have been doing this particular penitential act and I cannot fathom why there is STILL SO MUCH STUFF THAT I CAN GIVE AWAY.

"You might regret getting rid of it."

Keeping too much and then finding a use for just one thing reinforces the urge to save everything.

I think the psychologists would call this phenomenon "intermittent reinforcement," which is very effective.

The power of this type of reinforcement is why giving things away can be difficult.
